Why we love it
Carrying a newborn in a stretchy wrap feels like almost nothing else. You have your baby snuggled up and held close and the fabric just moulds around you both. But if you have more than one baby do you need to miss out on this feeling? No! You can use a stretchy wrap to carry two babies together!
You can use a stretchy wrap to carry one baby at a time or two babies together, using the same basic way to tie – nothing needs to change! Stretchy wraps can then become an ideal way of carrying either one or two babies as needs arise.
You can pre-tie everything, leave it on all day and put babies in and out as you need, leaving you able to get on with your day.
Tips and tricks
What type of stretchy wrap
If you want to carry two babies in a stretchy we would recommend looking at a good quality two way (stretches in both the width and the length) stretchy wrap, possibly on the thicker side, with excellent elasticity (how easily the wrap bounces back) and not too stretchy (still feels firm). A stretchy with these qualities can be easier to master carrying with and last you longer than a thinner or less elastic stretchy. We feel that the JPMBB original is an ideal option, however we have seen JPMBB basics, Hana, Lifft and Izmi wraps all successfully used to carry two babies at once.
What age babies can be carried together in a stretchy wrap
You can carry two babies together right from birth until there is no longer room for them both on your front, or until it’s no longer comfortable for you. If your babies are premature or have additional health needs it may still be possible to carry them in this way but we’d advise speaking to a professional sling consultant about your options either in person or via one of our phone or Skype consultations.
Many people find that they can carry two babies together in a stretchy wrapfor several weeks or even a few months. How long this works for you will depend on your babies sizes and your own shape – if you have a broad chest you can fit bigger babies in your front!
Even if you can no longer use your stretchy to carry both babies together you can still use it to carry one at a time for longer.
How do I carry two babies together in a stretchy wrap
You use the same basic tie to carry two babies as to carry one baby, however one baby will sit in each side of the cross on your front. You may need to play around with where they sit on your chest, especially if you have large breasts.
Sitting two babies in the cross still gives you lots of options with positioning and being respectful of your babies natural position. You can use each side as a hammock pass, where both legs come out of the bottom and baby is chest to chest, or you can use each side as a cross pass where legs sit either side of the fabric with baby chest to chest. You could even position both babies seated sideways or off centred, as long as you are being respectful of their natural position and ensuring that they are safe and have clear airways!
Carrying after birth
If you are carrying two babies soon after giving birth please listen carefully to your body. However your babies arrived your body has been through a lot and you need to be respectful of that. Start gently, with short periods or carrying just one baby. If you have had a section keep the sling nice and high and nice and tight to ensure little pressure goes onto the healing wound. Enlist other people too! Slings can be a great tool for other family members to hold the babies and get that early newborn bonding time.
