Spotlight on the Ergobaby Original
The Ergobaby Original carrier is one of THE best known carriers out there. It is a common introduction into the world of baby carrying for huge numbers of parents even now – 14 years after it’s launch!
The Ergobaby Original exploded into a world of baby carrying which was dominated by one brand, and was instrumental in beginning the rise in a more mainstream view of baby carrying. It holds a special place in my own heart as being the first carrier which introduced me to a world of baby carrying beyond the ‘norm’.
The Ergobaby Original features a simple design which has worked for thousands of families across the globe. It is a buckle carrier which is worn with rucksack style straps, and it can be used to front carry, back carry and hip carry. It is suitable from around 6 months to 2 years old, and can be used from birth with the optional infant insert.
Parents love the Ergobaby Original because it is simple and comfortable, because it is quick, because it fold up relatively small and because they find the large pocket useful too!
Tips and Tricks for the Ergobaby Original
Where should the chest strap be on the Ergobaby Original?
The chest or back clip on the Ergobaby Original is movable and can slide up and down to be moved to the perfect position for you.
Many people find that the most comfortable position is near the bottom of the shoulder blades, where a bra strap typically sits on a woman. However it can be moved over a fairly large area and it is worth playing around to find the ‘sweet spot’ for you.
Ideally the chest strap should ensure that the shoulder straps sit straight on your shoulders without slipping off.

How do I do up the chest strap behind me?
Getting a buckle done up behind your back can be fiddly! There are lots of different methods available to you to make using your Ergobaby Original even easier.
Often the easiest method can be to lengthen the shoulder straps and do the chest strap up before putting your baby in. Once you have your baby in the carrier, simply put the strap over your head, put your arms through the shoulder straps and then tighten.

How do I get my baby on my back alone?
Many people are a little daunted at the idea of getting their baby on their back alone however there are several methods. Often the easiest method to start out with is the secure hip scoot.

There are also several methods to get your baby down again alone. A simple option is to find a secure seat on a sofa or chair and carefully remove your baby and the carrier. With older babies you can lower them to standing or you can reverse the hip scoot to bring your baby onto your front.

What age can I use my Ergobaby Original from and to?
The Ergobaby Original is suitable from around 5 or 6 months old, when your baby can sit fully in the panel and still bend their knees freely. If you have the infant insert it can be used from birth.
The Original is safe to use until the top of the panel comes below your child’s armpits, however many parents may find other larger panel carriers more comfortable before then. Many parents we work with find they want to try something larger around age 2, however we have seen the carrier used safely with children as old as 4.
How do I use the infant insert correctly?
Getting the infant insert right can be tricky. There are two parts of the insert, the cushion and the outer padded section. Newborn babies will need the full insert until around 8-12 weeks, and then generally just the cushion part for several more weeks, until they can sit fully in the carrier and bend their knees freely. Whether you need the insert is dependent on the size and leg length of your baby rather than just weight or age. Most babies will no longer need the insert in the Ergobaby Original around 5 or 6 months
